How to Afford to Be a Stay- At-Home Mom – Become Self-Employed

Many stay-at-home moms are often faced with the dilemma that how do you make ends meet with one salary(husband’s salary) and look after the children. If you decide to go to work, you will have to factor in the childcare costs. You would be hardly left with any money after taxes and childcare. Looking after children is especially hard during the school holidays. So how to afford to be a stay-at-home mom and also be financially independent ?

Why is important for mothers to be financially independent?

  • Create your own identity after motherhood. Mothers always think of their children first. Mothers will be happier and able to look after their children, if they think of their own needs too.
  • Increases your confidence- if you are earning money you will be naturally more confident.
  • In case your spouse is unable to provide for you or your children due to any unforeseen circumstances – you are able to provide for the family.
  • Extra money always helps- we all know that.
  • Your children will not take you for granted and will respect you.

Part time jobs

Unfortunately, part-time jobs are not easily available and you would still have to think of childcare during the school holidays unless you can find a job where you can work from home which might or might not be of interest to you.

Have you got any hobbies?

In case you have got any hobbies or any skill that you are good at, why not turn that into your own business? You can run your business from home which would reduce your overheads.

As mentioned in one of my previous posts, Stay At Home Mom Business ideas -Earn While You Are At Home, you can sell on a website called Etsy, if you have made the product yourself.

If you don’t have any hobbies

To become successful it is very important to enjoy the work you do!

If you do not have any hobbies, you can start a blog of your own. It is very simple to do so.

The path to self -employment is not easy

The path to self employment is not easy but if you work hard the rewards can be good. It is important that you are:

  • disciplined
  • dedicated
  • hardworking
  • have a goal or a plan in mind

As I mentioned above do something you enjoy !

During the school holidays

During the school holidays, if you struggle to do your work refer to my previous post on How to Work From Home With Kids. Also tell your children about your work if they are old enough to understand. Explain to them that you are working from home so that you can look after them.

Start Early

Start early- preferably few months after birth of your child. You will have to give time to the business before it starts making money. I know it will be hard when you have a baby to take care of, you can work when your baby is asleep, and ask your partner to help look after the baby. Even if your child is older, it is never too late to become self-employed. Bear in mind the benefits of self-employment :

  • Work at your own convenience.
  • No need to apply for annual leave during school holidays or when your child is sick.
  • Whatever you earn is yours.
  • You are not answerable to anyone.

In short,

You are your own boss!

If you are planning to be self- employed or have just become self-employed, you would have to continuously motivate yourself to move further. Don’t be discouraged by failures. Treat failure as an experience. Believe in yourself and in your goals. Watch motivational videos on You Tube to motivate myself.

Training and Support

If you are doing something completely new, it would be a good idea to get some training and support. For example, if you don’t have a clue about blogging you can join Wealthy Affiliate which not only provides excellent step-by-step training but also gives community support. Best of all, you work at your own convenience and at your own pace.

You are on your own

Some people do feel apprehensive about being self employed as you are on your own but being alone comes with the territory. If you feel lonely , then you can also go for some networking events where you can meet people who do similar work as you.

  1. My mom is a stay at home mom. She works for herself as a baby sitter too. This lifestyle is great. Once you take care one with good trust, you will get more referral and more babies come. This stay at home dream comes true. Children needs an adult to be with them at all times. It is just sad some children are sent away to school and tuition all day every day.

    1. Thanks for your comment Kit. Being a baby sitter is an excellent business as well .If a mother is self employed , she can be with her children as and when her children need her. There is no need to apply for annual leaves!

  2. I love the concept of your article – my wife has been looking for ways to become a stay at home mom for our children so one of us could always be there should something arise. You reference Etsy- this is a great place for crafty people, and my wife has started looking around there to see what people are buying and selling to see if she fits in, and this is the route she is aiming towards. You mention wealthy affiliate for their training and support – this seems like the best option in my opinion. I have been using that platform for over 3 months now and I love it. I have gained so much insight on website development and it has helped me create a website for my wife’s products without having to go through Etsy. The training, 24/7 support, and immense amount of people on it always allows you to find help or guidance at every corner.

    1. Thanks CravenATAT, I couldn’t agree more. Wealthy Affiliate provides in-depth training and invaluable community support . The community has given me so much motivation which is very  much required for a self employed person.

  3. Thank you for sharing this as I have a co-worker is now a new mother for the very first time and she just recently came back to work, though part time instead of the full time position she had before she gave birth. I know she’s talked about how she wishes should stay home full time to take care of her baby and the costs of childcare (though she found a remedy for that during her work hours). She would definitely benefit from this article so I will definitely share it. I think she would really like Wealthy Affiliate. How long have you been self-employed and a stay at home mom?

    1. Hi Brian. I have been self employed for nearly 3 years now and in between I did try to get employed , which didn’t work out at all and that’s when I got the perspective – self employment versus employment. I am a stay-at-home mom for 7 years and I do wish I had started my business earlier! Childcare costs eat up so much of your salary that you wonder does it make sense for me to work?

  4. With more and more stay at home moms these days, I’m starting to see some moms taking up Network Marketing and building businesses around health and beauty niches mainly.

I think now with the internet and especially social media platforms, makes it easier for moms to become self-employed and build profitable businesses.

Jobs can be a good option but like you say, they come with hassles. So either a job from home or a home based business is definitely the best approach for moms.

I also agree that self-employment is far from easy because it takes an incredible amount of hard work to bring in a decent profit. So the process needs to be treated as a “business”, especially with the amount of competition these days.

As a business owner myself, I also know that “motivation” is definitely one of the contributing factors to success. What would you say is the best form of motivation to help keep stay at home moms on track with their ventures?

    1. Thanks Neil. Self Employment is not an easy path . Being motivated will make the path easier. It will help if you write down your goals down per day , per month , per year. If you experience any failures, do not give up ! Treat your failures as learning curves. Listen to motivational videos on You Tube – this helped me a lot ! Also, I meditate everyday to give me clarity. For a stay-at-home mom, her business will be an escape from the drudgery of household work and also provide her financial independence.

  5. I think it is very important for stay at home moms to be financially independent. It is good for a marriage (especially with kids involved) because this will put less financial pressure on the relationship. I think that being able to buy things you need or want is also great without having to ask permission for money.

Financial independence is also empowering and can teach children that it does not matter if you are a man or woman, you an do what you set your mind to. Young children need strong male and female role models to shape their own understanding of the world.

I also think that stay at home moms are able to teach their children vital life skills like managing money and the value of money, so being a successful stay at home business person is also a good example for your kids to follow.

    1. Thanks for your comment Renton. You are right, financial independence is very empowering ! Also running a business will provide stay-at -home moms with mental stimulation which is so desperately required when you are at home and looking after kids.

  6. This is a well thought out and beautifully presented article on parenting and working  for Mums. I have been there and done that and it is difficult however the opportunities for Mums to work now are much better than when I was young. We did not have the child care facilities and there was no the online market for working mums.  Your reasons for women to work were well thought out however I feel that with very young children the greater and more important role is to raise those children  well. If you can fit in some work around them that is great but they should not be compromised as a consequence.

Wealthy Affiliate as you have noted is one such way that Mums can work at home at a time that allows them to attend to children as well.

You listed some very important attributes that are needed to be successful.

disciplined dedicated hardworking have a goal or a plan in mind

These are all required to be a parent as well.   I found for me to work when my children were young I needed to employ an au pair. That was my way of coping with the demand of both.

I wish you well with your blogging.

    1. Thanks Judy. I agree with you , children shouldn’t be compromised as parents are responsible for shaping the future of their children.  Self employment gives mothers the option of working at their convenience. For example , working at night . If you start your business when your child is very young , it will be difficult but remember that for the business to get established , it will take time. You won’t be busy from day one. With self employment you can also run the business at your own pace as you are the boss!
